Thanks Glen. However, I don’t see this article as a “suggested fix” for the dysfunctions seen with story points. I am merely presenting an alternative means of estimating for those struggling with it.
I would imagine there are many different root causes of story point (and broader) estimation dysfunction, depending on the team/organisation and its context. And fixing them is likely outside the reach of most folks who are just trying to do their jobs well, day to day. So I think a more productive path — not just for story point estimation but for any practice — is to simply provide folks with suggestions for alternatives they can try.
Many folks think there is only “one way” to “do agile”. I find that looking at what they are trying to achieve, and showing them there are multiple options to achieve it, is an effective way of helping people.
